Curriculum Overview (Grade 1 – Grade 9)
The Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum at Kiota School focuses on developing key learner competencies, including:
- Communication
- Critical thinking
- Creativity
- Collaboration
- Problem-solving
Learners also build:
- Digital literacy
- Self-awareness
- Adaptability
The curriculum is delivered through practical, student-centered activities, with a strong emphasis on values, responsibility, and applying knowledge to real-life situations. The goal is to nurture holistic, competent, and independent individuals.
Targeting children aged 6 to 8 years, our Lower Primary classes focus heavily on turning fundamental communication, arithmetic, and motor skills into natural habits. At Kiota, we avoid rigid, passive lectures, ensuring that the play-based and activity-based exploration required by the curriculum is fully realized.
How We Teach the Key Learning Areas:
- Mathematics: Instead of abstract memorization, arithmetic is taught through physical, real-world scenarios.
- English Language, Kiswahili/KSL & Indigenous Language: Literacy is built through interactive reading circles, phonetic games, and daily storytelling. Learners regularly present and act out stories, which rapidly builds public speaking confidence and language mechanics.
- Environmental Activities: Science and community life happen outdoors. Kiota learners step onto the school grounds for hands-on projects, such as tracking plant growth cycles, classifying waste, or practicing health and nutrition by safely preparing their own fruit snacks.
- Creative Arts, Sports & Religious Education: Motor skills and character development are integrated through structured physical education, swimming, art projects, and values-based religious instruction that emphasizes empathy and collaboration.
Covering ages 9 to 11 years, these classes mark a deliberate transition from basic foundational concepts to deep, practical application. At Kiota School, we shift the pedagogical focus to analytical and critical thinking skills, preparing students to become independent problem-solvers.
How We Teach the Key Learning Areas:
- Integrated Science & Technology: Learning moves into active experimentation. Working in small groups with school digital devices, students research topics, build physical models (like simple water filtration systems), and present their findings to the class to naturally build digital literacy.
- Agriculture & Nutrition: This area is entirely hands-on. Students actively manage small garden patches, study soil health through direct contact, and learn cooking and nutrition fundamentals in a practical setting.
- Mathematics, English, Kiswahili & Social Studies: Core academic subjects are taught through inquiry-based projects. For instance, Social Studies involves researching local community structures and mapping out resources, encouraging analytical thought over rote memorization.
- Creative Arts, Sports & Religious Education: Students explore more complex creative mediums—from music instrumentation and digital design to advanced teamwork in competitive sports.
